Origin

Venezia Giulia IGT

Grapes

60% Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon

Type of Soil

The rows of vines run from north to south in the area known as “Vigneto dei Patriarchi”, which lies within the communal boundaries of Terzo d’Aquileia, in the Region of Friuli. Here the soils have a similar structure to that of the terrain of alluvial origin in the area of Bordeaux: a mixture of sand and clay with good fertility and an excellent ability to retain and then release to the vines those mineral elements that they require in order to thrive.

Cordon Spur.

Plant Density

5,500 vines per hectare (2,225 per acre). The average age of the vines is 10 years.

Yield

65 quintals of grapes per hectare.

Vinification and Maturation

Harvesting by hand - with extremely careful selection of the grapes - was carried out during the last ten days of September and the first week in October. The must fermented in traditional vinification tanks at a controlled temperature of 30°C. (86°F.); maceration lasted three weeks at 32°C. (89.5° F.). The wine matured for 12 months in Allier oak barriques (1/3 new, 1/3 2nd. year, 1/3 3rd. year wood), followed by a period of bottle aging before it was released onto the market
